Finding rest . . .

Updated: Sep 23, 2023

We’re all familiar with that place. It’s not fun. The place where everything seems unsettled, discontent, burdensome, and even exhausting. From the time we get up our brains begins screaming what we MUST DO in order to accomplish this or solve that. And it all depends on ME – what I do!

I know better. Saying it out loud even sounds ridiculous.

But I’ve had to relearn this lesson a lot lately . . . just being honest. Satan knows just what buttons to push with me and I know it. So why don’t I always see it coming and preempt the strike? Because I’m not perfect – yet.

But I know very well what I really MUST do: pursue Him – His presence, His face, His truth, and His wisdom. THAT is the most valuable use of my time, because HE is my only source of settled-ness, contentment, burdenLESS-ness, and true rest in this life.

There is more power in a minute spent with my God than in 10 million spent trying to solve any earthly problem. And boy, does the enemy want me to forget that! The only way to not fall for the lie is to fill my mind with so much truth there’s just not room for it. God’s Word is living and active and His presence is transforming.

Why are you in despair, O my soul? And why have you become disturbed within me?

Hope in God, for I shall again praise Him for the help of His presence” (Psalm 42:5).

Something I’ve done lately is make an iTunes playlist simply called “Peace/Rest.” And I love having a ready-made, go-to list of songs that stops my racing mind and quickly draws me back to that place of quiet retreat with my Savior.

One of the songs on this list is “Here” by Kari Jobe. It’s been perfect for drawing me into God’s amazing presence where I can seek His face, renew my mind, and allow His Spirit to move freely in my life once again. The result is worship. You can’t help but bow to this loving, merciful God. For it finally becomes all about Him again – like it should be.

As a matter of fact, take a few minutes, close your eyes, and let the beautiful, yet simple, words and melody of this song wash over you.

Here – Kari Jobe

Come and rest here Come and lay your burdens down Come and rest here There is refuge for you now

You’ll find His peace And know you’re not alone anymore He is near You’ll find His healing Your heart isn’t shattered anymore He is here

Breathe in. Breathe out. You will – you will find Him here

I will rest in You. I will rest in You.

You will find Him – You will find Him here You will find Him – You will find Him here

How do you get out of that unsettled, burden-filled place when it comes – to find renewed peace and rest?
